Steady State Roasting (Carlsbad) – Just judging their aprons alone, these guys take their coffee seriously. Jokes aside, this little coffee shop packs a big punch. Steady State Roasting has made a name for themselves by curating single-origin coffees with an emphasis on precision and high-quality beans. Their clean, minimalist interior reflects their focus on quality over fuss, and the shop’s welcoming ambiance makes it a perfect spot for coffee lovers.
Revolution Roasters (Oceanside & Carlsbad) – This woman-owned coffee shop is a cornerstone of the north-county community. They roast their own coffee, have an incredible pastry program and they have cute merch (bonus). Try one of their seasonal offerings like the Ounces of Fall latte with housemade almond milk and vegan pop tarts. Their pistachio and rose morning bun is a crispy sugary buttery piece of heaven. And I almost always order a sandwich to enjoy later in the afternoon.
Necessity (Encinitas) – Newly established but already adored, Necessity roasts their own beans and emphasizes quality at every step. Alongside their coffee, they serve delicious pastries from Relic Bageri and just launched their pizzas, which are large enough to share with your pals. It's tucked away in the Moonlight Beach neighborhood and is really a hidden gem.
Little Joy (Del Mar) They started as a small coffee cart, and now Little Joy has grown into a charming brick and mortar just steps from the beach. Known for its rich espresso drinks made with Zumbar beans (some of the best in SD!), this spot combines quality coffee with a laid-back coastal vibe. Perfect for grabbing a latte to enjoy on a morning walk by the ocean.
Bread & Donuts
Prager Brothers (Carlsbad & Encinitas) - Prager Bros is known for its artisanal, naturally leavened breads that highlight local and organic ingredients. Their dedication to craft is evident in every loaf and pastry, with a special focus on traditional techniques. It's a go-to for anyone craving high-quality, freshly baked bread. Beyond their bread, they make sandwiches, pastries, pizza dough and deliciously addictive shortbread cookies.
Sidecar Donuts (Del Mar)- Sidecar elevates the classic donut experience with creative flavors like huckleberry and salted butter. Each donut is crafted from scratch with seasonal ingredients, and fans appreciate the inventive twists that keep every visit exciting.
VG Donuts (Cardiff) – Short for very good. Not much has changed over the last sixty years at VG’s Donuts and that’s just the way we like it. You can still find the owner, Joe Mettee with a chocolate-stained apron on behind the counter, serving up cinnamon twists, glazed donuts and decorated sugar cookies. They also do seasonal breads, rolls and holiday baked goods.
Brunch
Manna (Leucadia) – This cozy Leucadia spot has quickly become a brunch favorite. Known for its fresh and unique dishes, Manna offers a mix of global flavors in a relaxed setting. It’s the kind of place where locals are willing to wait because they know the food is worth it. As someone who does not like French toast, get the French toast. Also, the Turkish eggs are hands down my all-time favorite.
Waverly (Cardiff) - Waverly brings sophistication to the brunch scene with elegant plates and a refined atmosphere. This trendy spot is popular for its avocado toast, eggs benedict, and craft cocktails. Try the Bodega Boy (mezcal, coconut, toasted rice, lime—goodbye!) It’s an ideal spot for a special occasional or a treat yourself weekend brunch.
Claire’s On Cedros (Solana Beach) – A classic cafe serving breakfast and brunch on the weekends. Claire’s offers a huge menu and cozy ambiance. Their lemon ricotta pancakes and green scramble are two of my favorites. They have coffee for you while you wait for your table.
Thyme in the Ranch (Rancho Santa Fe) – This is a timeless café and bakery tucked into the village in Rancho Santa Fe where you can sit for breakfast or lunch. They offer freshly baked items like scones, cookies, muffins, cakes, quiche and pies by the slice. A great spot to get soup, salad, or sandwich and a treat to go.
Healthy Lunch
GoodOnYa (Cardiff) - With a strong focus on organic and sustainable ingredients, GoodOnYa is a haven for health-conscious diners. They boast a non GMO menu with good oils, grass fed butters and meats, heirloom grains, wild sustainable seafood and more. Their menu includes nutrient-packed smoothies, fresh salads, and sandwiches that highlight locally sourced produce. My favorite order is a glass of the hydration (they make their own electrolytes), a black matcha latte, and the tuna salad with a side of pickled carrots. Their retail shop highlights local goodies and natural wines.
Healthy Creations (Encinitas) – Known for their local, organic and wholesome ingredients, Healthy Creations is a casual spot offering healthy breakfast and lunch. Think nutrient dense bowls, wraps, salads, and smoothies. They also have a selection of healthy treats and grocery items. It’s perfect for a quick, nutritious lunch on a Sunday afternoon while running some errands. I love their kale Caesar, Powerhouse smoothie, and Daybreak breakfast bowl.
Nectarine Grove (Leucadia & Del Mar) – Nectarine Grove specializes in organic, gluten-free, and paleo-friendly meals, making it a top choice for clean eaters. They have a great drink bar with coffee drinks (try the Golden Milk!), smoothies, breakfast, lunch and bakery. They’re located right on 101 in Leucadia making a perfect spot to meet up with pals on the weekend or grab something before hitting the beach.
Casual Cool
Hamburger Hut (Leucadia) - A classic, no-frills burger joint, Hamburger Hut serves juicy burgers with a nostalgic, all-American vibe. Perfect for a post Beacon’s surf sesh or a happy hour with friends. Their craft cocktails and boozy slushees are on point. They host trivia on Wednesdays and live music on the weekends!
Miller’s Table (Oceanside) – A charming wine bar with a cozy vibe, Miller’s Table serves shareable plates and rotating wines. The owner has adopted a no-waste mindset, which leads to delicious creations. The menu highlights local ingredients with a European flair, making it a delightful choice for couples looking for something unique.
Birdseye Kitchen (Leucadia) – A vibey southeast Asian restaurant right on the 101 that serves Thai, Lao and Vietnamese dishes. Great for date night or celebratory dinner with a big group. Their menu has your favorites like pho, pad-se-ew, fried rice and Panang curry with a few unique dishes like the coconut crispy rice salad—one of ym favs. Plus, it’s one of the only Thai restaurants with a full bar.
Viewpoint Brewing (Del Mar) – Good beer, good food and good service. Finally, a casual, down to earth spot hits Del Mar. Their menu has classic dishes like fish tacos, fried chicken sando, a classic burger, smoked gouda mac n cheese and flatbreads. Outdoor seating makes it perfect for dogs and kids.
Mexican
Jorge’s Mexicatessen (Encinitas) - When you’re under the weather and need to come back to life, get a large bowl of chicken soup from Jorge’s. Mexico City-style chicken soup with rice, onion, tomato, chicken and avocado. Available spicy, too. This spot is a hidden gem for Mexican comfort food. It’s a taco shop in a strip mall, so get it to go and enjoy it in the comforts of your own home (or bed).
Pavlos Tacos (Encinitas) – If you know, you know. No one makes a better vegetarian burrito than Rico’s Taco Shop. Now called Pavlos, the menu, ingredients and staff are the same and we don’t want it any other way. Try the Justin burrito (named after my pre-school buddy!) with beans, cheese, rice, French fries, double wrapped in two flour tortillas or the rolled taco plate. A local favorite.
Cocina Del Carmen (Vista) – Oaxacan food at its best. You have to try the birria—roasted beef slow cooked in guajillo pepper consume—whether it’s in plate or taco format. Chile rellenos, mole, enchiladas and the chile verde are all on the list of must-try menu items. This little spot is tucked into a strip mall, but they’ve done a good job of creating a nice vibe in there. They have a bar with beers on draft. Simple and authentic.
Fidel’s Little Mexico (Solana Beach) or Norte (Carlsbad) – You go to Fidel’s for the ambiance. Big booths, authentic décor, friendly staff and roaming mariachi. Their salsa is drinkable and the casa margarita is fab. My go-to order is a bean tostada. Their chicken and rice soup is also heavenly, along with their sopes and chile relleno. You can’t go wrong with a taco combo plate.
Tacos
Lola 55 (Carlsbad) – The Michelin-star taco spot. Modern and stylish, Lola 55 has elevated tacos with gourmet ingredients like braised short rib and fried avocado. Known for creative pairings and a fun ambiance, it’s a top choice for taco enthusiasts looking for something unique.
Haggo’s (Leucadia) - Known for its dedication to organic and locally sourced ingredients, Haggo's combines bold flavors with a farm-to-table approach. The small, beachy shack setting feels like a hidden gem, where you can enjoy delicious and eco-conscious tacos, burritos, and bowls with fillings like fish, shrimp, and vegan options.
Fish 101 (Leucadia & Cardiff) – The owner fishes for your local catch and the groms serve your crispy fish tacos at this favorite spot. Known for their fish tacos, clam chowder, and daily catch, Fish 101 delivers fresh, flavorful, and locally inspired dishes in a relaxed, coastal atmosphere. Can’t go wrong with a fish plate, shrimp burrito, fish tacos or fish sandwich!
Salt + Lime (Del Mar) - Your favorite Mexican food truck now has a brick and mortar. Modern Mexican with great chips and guac, homemade tortillas, ceviche, tostadas and tacos! Their vegan asparagus taco is delicious and their baja fish tacos are a must-order. Their white mole and mushroom dish and bone marrow quesadilla are also fan-favs.
Pizza
Corner Pizza (Leucadia, Oceanside, Bressi Ranch) – Known for artisanal pizzas with locally sourced ingredients, Corner Pizza delivers creative pies with a Californian twist. Start with oysters, natural wines, and a salad and then choose your favorite pies. Their New York style pizza has a thin and crispy crust. My faves are the Margarita Burrata and Killer Bee with hot honey.
Privateer Pizza (Oceanside) – A coal-fired pizza spot known for its inventive toppings and laid-back atmosphere. Their BBQ chicken pizza and house-made hot sauce add a unique spin to the traditional pie.
Allmine (Oceanside) – With a casual vibe and inventive menu, Allmine serves up artisanal, hand-crafted pizzas that celebrate unique flavors. Their wood-fired oven brings a perfectly charred crust, while their rotating specials and unconventional toppings, like prosciutto with pear and honey, make each visit a new adventure for your taste buds.
Bongiorno’s (Solana Beach) – The best New York style pizza by the slice. My go-to is always cheese, but the buffalo chicken is one of their best sellers. Sometimes happiness is sitting at a plastic table and eating a delicious slice of cheese pizza served on a paper plate.
Fish
Herb & Sea (Encinitas) – An upscale spot with coastal-inspired dishes and a chic ambiance. Start with the oysters, then move to handmade pastas or wood-fired pizzas. Everything I’ve had at Herb & Sea has been delicious. I appreciate they’re noting the fishermen and farms from where they source their proteins. Great for a special occasion or date night.
Matsu (Oceanside) – This minimalist, Japanese omakase-style restaurant offers an intimate, chef-curated dining experience. Each course presents exquisite flavors, making it a special treat for those seeking an elegant night out.
Wrench & Rodent (Oceanside) - This eclectic, chef-driven sushi spot blends traditional Japanese flavors with unconventional twists. Known for creative, sustainable seafood offerings, Wrench & Rodent features innovative dishes like their sushi "oddballs" and omakase menus, which are as artistic as they are delicious. This is a must-visit for sushi lovers who enjoy something different.
Fancy Date-Night
Jeune et Jolie (Carlsbad) - This Michelin-starred French restaurant offers a chic and intimate dining experience with a modern twist on classic French cuisine. Known for its refined dishes and exceptional service, Jeune et Jolie is the perfect spot for a special night out. The beautifully designed space, with its pink and gold accents, adds to the romantic atmosphere.
Valle (Oceanside) – A Michelin-starred restaurant featuring contemporary Mexican cuisine cooked over charcoal and wood. Valle’s tasting menu showcases bold flavors and a fine-dining atmosphere, making it a perfect spot for an upscale date night.
Valentina (Encinitas) – This European-inspired bistro offers a cozy yet refined ambiance, with a menu that spans Spanish, French, and Italian influences. Their extensive wine selection pairs beautifully with dishes like paella and house-made pasta. Valentina is a perfect spot for a romantic evening or celebratory dinner with friends.
Dija Mara (Oceanside) – A unique mix of Southeast Asian flavors brings a Bali-inspired tapas menu to North County. Known for its fusion dishes like pork belly skewers and charred octopus. The restaurant is industrial with colorful and bold street art that reflects their creative menu and flavor-packed dishes.
Campfire (Carlsbad) – Campfire has a rustic-chic atmosphere and a focus on wood-fired cooking. The open kitchen and outdoor fire pit give it a warm, inviting vibe, while the inventive dishes like ember-cooked veggies and smoky cocktails make it a memorable dining experience. I could eat their broccoli every day for the rest of my life.
Retail Wine
Little Victory Wine Market (Encinitas) – Finally a natural wine shop in north county! Little Victory offers an eclectic selection of natural wines from all over the world. With a relaxed and welcoming vibe, it’s a great place to discover unique bottles or enjoy a glass in a friendly, unpretentious atmosphere.
MRKT Space (Encinitas) – Part café and part retail shop, you can find all sorts of edible goodies in this space. Shop for natural wines, non-alcoholic wine and large format kombuchas, grocery items, spices, oils, tomato sauces, anchovies, soaps and more. It’s a great spot to grab a coffee and a birthday gift for your bestie,
Bottlecraft (Oceanside) – A craft beer paradise. Bottlecraft offers a rotating selection of local and nationwide craft beers, along with a curated list of other boozy bevs. While you can enjoy a pint at Bottlecraft, the upscale liquor store is great for stocking up on your favorite wines, beers and canned cocktails.
Al Fresko (Oceanside) – If you’re headed to a friends place for dinner, stop here for a delicious and gorgeous cheese plate and a bottle of natural wine.
